Nike Air Max Day '22 | What Can We Expect?
Three new colourways of the classic Air Max 1 will mark this year's Air Max Day!
This Saturday marks Nike's yearly Air Max Day - a celebration held by the sportswear giant to honour its Air technology. Since 2014, sneakerheads in their masses have gathered to take part in the event, sharing their grails and lining up for new exclusives. This year is set to be no different, as Nike takes the opportunity to release a trio of colourful sneakers, with each pair exclusive to a specific region!
From the Nike Tailwind to the Air Max 1, the 'Air within' represents a saga of legendary sneakers we've come to drool over. In 2017, the brands 'Vote Forward' creative campaign led to the release of the legendary Sean Wotherspoon x Nike Air Max 1/97. And year after year, Nike continues to spotlight the fans who truly value the brand.
The Air Max; A Brief History
As varied as the Air Max is, so too are the stories behind them. Originally developed in 1978, it was Frank Rudy who came up with the idea of putting air into a shoe. With aeronautical experience at NASA, Frank was brought on by Nike to develop the Tailwind. Almost a decade later, Tinker Hatfield exposed the inner workings of the Air Max, marking the beginnings of the visible Air window we know today.
This year, Nike have lined up three exclusive Air Max 1's for the sneaker's birthday Though more details are expected to follow, here's what we know so far!
Nike Air Max 1 Blueprint - North America Exclusive
Giving us Patta vibes, the Air Max 1 Blueprint features every element we'd expect of the silhouette. Built from a combination of mesh and suede, the sneaker's base layer is made up of white toecaps, midfoot sections and collars, with sky blue overlaying panels and outsoles. Gridded detailing is apparent on the tongues and Swoosh, while an embossed globe insignia sits on the heels.
Nike Air Max 1 La Ville-Lumière - Europe Exclusive
Translating to 'City Of Lights', the Air Max 1 La Ville-Lumière is muted in comparison to its Blueprint rendition. Taking inspiration from Paris, the sneaker is neutral in design, with cream overlaying panels atop an iridescent base. On the tongue, '3.26' marks Air Max Day, while a detachable branded lace chain represents further recognition of the holiday.
Nike Air Max 1 Wabi-Sabi - Latin America Exclusive
Finally, the Air Max 1 Wabi-Sabi is mismatched, inspired by - and named after - the Japanese world-view of the acceptance of imperfection. Built from mustard, green and pink colour-blocking panels, the sneaker is designed with intricate stitching, deliberate haphazard ties and a cracked effect on the midsole.
